Literacy Excellence Supporting Stronger Communities

Nominations Open for Council of the Federation Literacy Award

The Provincial Government is encouraging all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to celebrate the contributions of adult literacy learners in their communities. Nominations are open for the 2015 Council of the Federation Literacy Award. The deadline for nominations is May 29.

“The Council of the Federation Literacy Award recognizes outstanding achievement, innovative practice, and excellence in the literacy community. I commend these individuals for their commitment and hard work, and encourage the people of the province to nominate adult learners for this award.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Since 2005, the Council of the Federation Literacy Award has been awarded in provinces and territories across Canada. Created by Canada’s premiers, the award recognizes the valuable contributions of Canadians in the field of literacy, particularly in the areas of family, Aboriginal groups, health, workplace, and community literacy.

“Our government recognizes the importance of supporting literacy and essential skills development for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and over the last decade, we have invested $78.6 million in adult literacy initiatives. This investment is helping to address the needs of many individuals in communities throughout the province.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills

Any person or group can nominate an individual for the Council of the Federation Literacy Award. Nominees must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, 18 years of age or older, and have participated in an adult literacy, workplace literacy or Adult Basic Education program for at least six months.

The recipient will be announced on International Literacy Day in September. For more information or to obtain a nomination form, visit www.aes.gov.nl.ca.
