The following statement was issued today by the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Government Acknowledges Nepal Earthquake

On behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the people of Nepal and northern India who lost family and friends in the earthquake that occurred yesterday near Kathmandu, Nepal. Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by the disaster and we wish a speedy recovery to all those injured.

Provincial Government officials have been in contact with Memorial University. While no one is registered with Memorial as being in the impacted area for official business, research or academic activity, the university has reached out to the small contingent of Nepalese students who attend the university. Additionally, the university is offering support to any Memorial community members who may be volunteering in the region and is monitoring all official channels for any information pertaining to the Memorial community and providing support as necessary.

Friends and relatives in Canada who are concerned about Canadian citizens known to be in the affected area should contact Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada's 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre by calling 1-800-387-3124 (toll-free) or 613-996-8885 (collect calls are accepted) or sending an email to sos@international.gc.ca.
