Connecting Youth and Strengthening Communities

Workshop Supports Youth Volunteers and Builds Community Relationships

The Provincial Government encourages collaborative efforts and research that will support youth volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador. On Wednesday, April 22, staff from the Office of Public Engagement, Radhoc Youth Leadership, Memorial University's Department of Political Science, the Community Sector Council, and Memorial's School of Social Work will join forces in an interactive workshop to discuss barriers, successes and best practices to foster youth involvement in communities.

"Volunteers have long been the backbone of Newfoundland and Labrador, but we need to ensure we have new volunteers, new blood, and fresh perspectives to help ensure our communities remain strong and welcoming places to live. I encourage people to register for the workshop and join in the discussion on how our entire society will benefit from helping young volunteers develop the skills they need to be effective leaders across the province."
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement

The workshop, which takes place tomorrow at Memorial University at 7:00 p.m. in room UC-3018 of the University Centre, is inspired by a collaborative initiative underway in the Gander - New-Wes-Valley Region called Uniting Community Leaders. The initiative aims to discover what strategies can be put in place to support both youth and the community sector through volunteerism. Partners will deliberate on opportunities to strengthen rural communities and discuss research completed by Radhoc Youth Leadership, who have used collaborative workshops to collect data from over 180 youth over the past few months.

"Youth have the capacity to drive new ideas forward to make community organizations successful, sustainable and relevant. Involving youth in volunteerism is both vital for the community sector, and critical for the personal and professional development of the youth involved. Community volunteerism helps youth develop valuable skills, gain valuable connections and give back to the community. It contributes to the well-being of the volunteer, the community organization, and the community at large."
- Jennifer Crowe, Coordinator and Researcher, Student Volunteer Bureau, Memorial University of Newfoundland
