Recognizing the Contributions of Labrador Inuit

Labrador Inuit Celebrate 40 Years of the Labrador Inuit Association

Today, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador congratulates the Labrador Inuit on the 40th anniversary of the Labrador Inuit Association (LIA).

"This is indeed a day of celebration for all Inuit throughout the province. For over 40 years the Inuit of Labrador have advocated to realize a future with their own government to improve communities and achieve their dreams and aspirations. Being a proud Inuk, I have deep respect for those that worked tirelessly to see the Nunatsiavut Government come into being, and I, along with the Provincial Government, offer sincere congratulations."
- The Honourable Keith Russell, Minister of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs

First formed in October 1973, the LIA was officially recognized on March 26, 1975. On December 1, 2005, the LIA transitioned into the Nunatsiavut Government, after the 2004 ratification of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. With direct control over 15,799 square kilometres of Labrador Inuit Lands, and significant rights and influence throughout the larger Labrador Inuit Settlement Area, the Nunatsiavut Government has preserved and promoted the close connection that its beneficiaries have with the land and sea, while continuing to make strategic decisions to improve the lives of all its beneficiaries.

"On the 40th anniversary of the Labrador Inuit Association, I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to reflect on the accomplishments of the Labrador Inuit and their contributions to the amazing culture and history of our province."
- Minister Russell

Nunatsiavut is Inuttut for "Our Beautiful Land" and represents over 6,000 beneficiaries in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as representing many other beneficiaries residing outside of the province.
