Celebrating the Achievements of Women

Provincial Government Proclaims International Women’s Day

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, joined the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women today in proclaiming March 8, 2015 as International Women’s Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The Provincial Government places a high priority on creating a society where women and girls can reach their full potential at home and school, in their workplaces and in their communities. Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity: Picture It! is the theme for International Women’s Day 2015 - a day to recognize and celebrate the contribution that women make to our communities.”
- The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women

The Provincial Government is committed to supporting the development and delivery of programs that ensure women have opportunities, tools and resources to achieve their goals, and that they can do so in safety.

This commitment includes ongoing support for the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, Women’s Centres, the Newfoundland Aboriginal Women’s Network, the Multicultural Women’s Organization of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Violence Prevention Initiative. Additionally, partnerships with the Women in Resource Development Corporation and the Office to Advance Women Apprentices will help achieve the goals of social and economic equality for women.

“International Women’s Day provides an important opportunity to celebrate the gains women have made. It is also a time to recognize what we have yet to achieve. Social and economic equality for women continues to be a goal we strive for, as we re-dedicate ourselves to working for equality, equity and inclusion.”
- Linda Ross, President, Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women

International Women’s Day has been celebrated since the early 1900s and thousands of events are held annually around the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. More information can be found at //www.un.org/en/events/womensday.
