Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Conception Bay South Concrete Batch Plant        (Reg. 1813)
Proponent: Johnson's Construction Limited

The proponent has submitted a registration to construct a fixed concrete batch plant and a single story office building at the Conception Bay South Industrial Park on Fowler's Road. The site covers five hectares. The batch plant will produce ready mix concrete and concrete products for the local market. The batch plant will be capable of operating year-round. Aggregate will be sourced and processed offsite with transport and stockpiling onsite as needed. The construction of the facility is expected to begin during the fall of 2015 with an anticipated construction period of five months.

The undertaking was registered on October 1, 2015; the deadline for public comments is November 9, 2015; and the minister's decision is due by November 15, 2015.

Marystown Atlantic Salmon Hatchery        (Reg. 1814)
Proponent: Grieg Nurseries NL Ltd.

The proponent is planning to construct and operate a Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) Hatchery for Atlantic salmon in the Marystown Marine Industrial Park. The project will include the construction of a hatchery, a smolt nursery and a smolt landbase and will encompass approximately 10.2 hectares of serviced land. The hatchery will produce up to seven million smolt annually, which will be sold to salmonid aquaculture farms in the province. The project is anticipated to generate up to 200 full-time and part-time jobs during the construction period and 23 full time positions during the operations phase. Construction is forecast to begin in the fall of 2015, with operations scheduled to commence in August 2016.

Crown District 12 Forestry Plan Amendment (Denny's Pond)        (Reg. 1815)
Proponent: Forestry and Agrifoods Agency

The proponent proposes to amend harvesting in Forest Management District 12 (Zone 5) Five Year Forest Operating Plan (2011-2015) near Denny's Pond. The amendment area is approximately 18 kilometres southwest of the community of Millertown and is north of Denny's Pond and east of Victoria River. The amendment area contains an estimated 21,000 cubic metres of merchantable softwood and encompasses 322 hectares of forested land. The predicted softwood harvest will be 5,000 cubic metres for the late fall of 2015 and 15,000 cubic metres will be harvested during the winter of 2016. It is estimated that 3,000 cubic metres of hardwood will be harvested and approximately six kilometres of Class C roads will be built.
