Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

ATV/ARGO Trails for Red Indian Lake Outfitting        (Reg. 1805)
Proponent: Red Indian Lake Outfitting

The proponent has submitted a proposal to register six ATV trails ranging from 1.5 to 20 kilometres in length with a combined length exceeding 110 kilometres. Some access to these trails is existing and some sections of these trails have been previously established. The proponent proposes to upgrade and to do repair and maintenance work on these trails in order to access existing hunting lodges and satellite hunting camps. Construction work is anticipated to begin upon release from environmental assessment and following receipt of all permits.

The undertaking was registered on August 24, 2015; the deadline for public comments is September 29, 2015; and the minister's decision is due by October 5, 2015.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

Indian Bay Pond Snowmobile Trail (Reg. 1791)
Proponent: Kittiwake Snowmobile Association (NLSF)

The project is released subject to the following conditions:

  • A minimum 50 metre naturally vegetated zone must be maintained between the proposed trail and any waterbody to protect the habitat of the Banded Killfish, which has been identified in the Indian Bay watershed and is listed as vulnerable under the Newfoundland and Labrador Endangered Species Act.
  • A minimum 30 metre naturally vegetated buffer must be maintained along all wetlands to protect sensitive riparian and aquatic species and their habitat.

Rocky Pond Cottage Access Road        (Reg. 1800)
Proponent: Junior Mahoney

The project is released subject to the following condition:

  • A minimum 50 metre naturally vegetated buffer shall be maintained along all waterbodies and wetlands to protect sensitive riparian and aquatic species and their habitat.

UNDERTAKING NOT PERMITTED TO PROCEED AT THIS TIME:

Canning's Lake Cottage and Access Road         (Reg. 1799)
Proponent: Cory King

The project is not permitted to proceed at this time as the proposed undertaking lies within a current commercial forest operating area. Should the land use for this area change, the project may proceed subject to the following condition:

  • A minimum 30 metre naturally vegetated buffer must be maintained along all water bodies and wetlands to protect sensitive riparian and aquatic species and their habitat.
