Promoting Responsible Outdoor Activity

Workshop Fosters Youth Hunter Skills

The Department of Environment and Conservation is partnering with rod and gun clubs in St. Johns and Deer Lake to offer two Youth Hunter Skills Workshops in St. Johns and Deer Lake. The St. Johns Rod and Gun Club session is taking place on June 6, and the Deer Lake Upper Humber Rod and Gun Association session will be held on June 13, 2015.

We are pleased to work collaboratively with these organizations to encourage safe and responsible involvement in hunting and trapping as well as other related outdoor activities. Participation in hunting and trapping is a very significant part of our culture and heritage and plays an important role in practical wildlife conservation and management.
- The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation

Youth between the ages of 12 and 17 are invited to attend the one-day events and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. During the workshop, participants will learn important hunting safety techniques for shotgun and rifle shooting, archery and bow-hunting techniques, outdoor safety and survival skills and other important lessons about wildlife conservation and management.

Organizations like local rod and gun clubs are important to communities. They help promote awareness about wildlife conservation throughout the province and often provide very suitable locations for the public to learn and practice hunting skills. I congratulate the members and volunteers of the St. Johns Rod and Gun Club and the Upper Humber Rod and Gun Club for their efforts and wish them success during these workshops.
- Minister Crummell
