Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.



UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:


Butt's Pond Aggregate Quarry (Gambo Area)                      (Reg. 1778)

Proponent: ANW Construction Limited


The proponent has submitted an application for the development of a two-hectare quarry located west of Butt's Pond, near Gambo. The purpose of the undertaking is to extract sand, gravel and rock to meet the demand for these materials for winter road sanding and nearby cottage lot development. The quarry will operate annually between April and November and will involve excavating and screening activities. There are existing quarries adjacent to the proposed quarry site, which, if approved, will result in a total quarry area exceeding 10 hectares, in this vicinity. Access to the quarry site is via an existing road. The scheduled start date for this undertaking is April 30, 2015.


The undertaking was registered on January 26, 2015; the deadline for public comments is March 3, 2015; and the minister's decision is due by March 12, 2015.


Lower Cove Limestone Mine Lease Expansion                      (Reg. 1779)

Proponent: Atlantic Minerals Limited


The proponent proposes to expand its limestone and dolomite mining lease(s) near Lower Cove and Sheaves Cove on the Port au Port Peninsula in western Newfoundland. The proposed expansion totals an area of 754 hectares to the north and northwest of their current operations and will be in the White Hills and Mainland areas. The expansion is to gain access to future high calcium limestone reserves adjacent to its current mining lease for an estimated 45-50 years of future reserves.

The undertaking was registered on January 26, 2015; the deadline for public comments is March 3, 2015; and the minister's decision is due by March 12, 2015.


APPEAL OF MINISTER'S DECISION:


Big Triangle Pond Mineral Exploration Access Road                      (Reg. 1725)

Proponent: Eagleridge International Limited


On October 10, 2014, the above noted undertaking was released from environmental assessment. On January 7, 2015, the minister received an appeal of that decision. The minister's decision on the appeal is due on March 9, 2015.
