Provincial Government Issues Tender for New Grade 4-6 School in Gander

A tender has been issued for the construction of a new Grade 4-6 school in Gander that will add additional capacity to address student enrollment in the community. The school will be designed to accommodate 450 students and is expected to open in 2017.

“Upgrading and modernizing school infrastructure is an important priority to support our students. The tender for this new school in Gander supports the Provincial Government’s multi-year education infrastructure development plan that prepares in a proactive way for projected growth. This will be a significant investment for a growing community and will have a tremendous impact on the quality of education students in Gander will receive.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Acting Minister of Education

This latest tender is for the second phase of the project. A contract for site work was previously awarded.

“Key investments continue to be made to improve school infrastructure for students, teachers and staff in communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. It is one of the many important initiatives moving forward this year through an investment of more than $660 million in schools, roads, health care facilities and municipal infrastructure projects.”
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The location of the new school will be on Magee Road at the corner of Raynham Avenue. The facility will include 25 classrooms, a gymnasium, a stage, a library resource centre, two music rooms, a lunch/multi-purpose room and a commercial kitchen.

“It's fantastic to see the Provincial Government moving forward with the next phase of the new Grade 4-6 school in Gander. This new school is a significant step forward in addressing the capacity issue in our community and will support the needs of our growing population. I look forward to seeing it take shape.”
- Kevin O'Brien, MHA for Gander

As part of the multi-year education infrastructure development plan, over $95 million is allocated through Budget 2015 for K-12 infrastructure to address short and longer-term provincial needs. This funding will build on the already unprecedented level of investment that has seen 14 new schools completed, 11 more in various stages of planning or construction, 27 major extensions and renovation projects completed and 13 more underway.
