Preserving and Showcasing Our Heritage Resources

$1.2 Million Announced in Support of the Heritage Sector

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today outlined its 2015-16 support for museums, archives and historical societies, with approximately $1.2 million in funding for organizations across the province. This funding will help celebrate the province's rich culture by enhancing, protecting, and exhibiting heritage resources, while contributing to economic development in all regions of the province.

"Our heritage as Newfoundlanders and Labradorians is a valuable resource that we cherish, and champion. Throughout our province, community museums, historical organizations, and dedicated volunteers work to protect and showcase our heritage. Heritage is a fundamental part of our government's continued focus on economic and population growth and we are pleased to support these organizations that enrich our communities."
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Operational support is being provided to heritage sector associations and 115 community organizations throughout the province. As part of this investment, the Provincial Government is providing $39,000 this year for a number of heritage projects such as the production of a book on the history of Norris Arm, an archeological research project aimed at working with private collectors, and continued documentation of stories surrounding the Bonne Bay cottage hospital. More information is available in the backgrounder.

"Continued operational support by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador through the Cultural Economic Development Program allows the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to provide education, training and advisory services to the 153 museums and heritage groups that make up our membership. Our members work to preserve and exhibit our province's tangible and intangible heritage for both residents and visitors; a task made easier with the financial assistance of the Cultural Economic Development Program which also helps leverage funding from other sources."
- John Griffin, President, Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador

Strong regional development is essential to maintain and increase the province's population, which are key elements of the Population Growth Strategy, Live Here, Work Here, Belong Here, A Population Growth Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador, 2015-2025. The strategy will ensure investments and programs are aligned to encourage individuals to choose Newfoundland and Labrador to live, work and raise a family.
