Supporting Economic Activity for Communities and Families
Enhancing New CBS Arena Will Attract More Activity
A new arena being constructed in Conception Bay South (CBS) will see further enhancements with a contribution of $200,000 from the Provincial Government. Ice surface conversion, audio/visual and staging equipment, along with acoustic panels will be purchased, which will allow the arena to operate year-round as a multi-purpose facility. The equipment will better position the arena to attract regional, provincial and national conferences, tourism and sporting events.
"This state-of-the-art arena will fulfill the need for recreation space and will be an attractive venue for trade shows and exhibitions. When complete, such a multi-purpose facility will draw activities that will mean increased economic development opportunities for enterprises in CBS and surrounding municipalities."
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development
Construction on the arena began in the fall of 2012. When complete the facility will include a regulation ice surface, walking track, seating for more than 1,000, eight dressing rooms, canteen and concessions, parking, and room for planned expansions. The ice surface conversion equipment is being cost-shared, with the Town of CBS contributing 38 per cent. The total arena project cost is approximately $21.4 million, with the Provincial Government contributing $13.3 million.
Through the Regional Development Fund, the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development provides support to organizations by way of non-repayable contributions for projects aimed at supporting economic development, innovation and capacity building in all regions of the province.
