Strengthening Communities Through Sound Investments

$25,000 Investment Supports International Heritage Boat Conference

The Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador is better positioned to promote the province’s wooden boat history and advance economic development efforts through strategic partnerships as the result of a $25,000 Provincial Government investment. Funding will be used by the museum to host and implement initiatives related to the International Heritage Boat Conference to be held in Trinity Bight in October 2016. In addition to international exposure for the museum and the province, the conference will provide an environment for wooden boat specialists to come together to share their expertise and perspectives on marketable products for both the tourism and education sectors.

“The tremendous work of the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador focuses on the promotion, enhancement and sustainability of the province’s tradition of wooden boat building, an important part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s cultural fabric. Vital work by the museum’s board and staff includes sharing and handing down the craftsmanship associated with boat building, while also connecting with the global community on development opportunities. Building on previous financial support of over $440,000, this investment of $25,000 will ensure that the Wooden Boat Museum is able to carry on with its educational activities and advance its goal of establishing the museum on the national and international stage.”
- The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Funding is being provided through the Regional Development Fund which supports organizations by way of non-repayable contributions for projects aimed at supporting economic development, innovation and capacity building. Previous investments for the Wooden Boat Museum have included support for improvements to infrastructure, the development of the Wooden Boats of Newfoundland and Labrador exhibition, documentation of boats and boat builders, and successful annual provincial conferences and boat building workshops.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador, I thank the Provincial Government for its ongoing support of our museum, and in particular, our Capacity Building Project. As part of this project, a three-day cultural experience will take place in the Trinity Bight area in October 2016. The event will include a diverse cast of characters needed for innovative program development in a staged setting filled with examples of artisanal boatbuilding skills, cuisine, theatre, music and friendly challenges on the water.”
- Beverly King, Project Manager, the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador
