Attracting New Workers to Build Strong Communities

Provincial Government to Participate in Working International Expos

In the coming days, officials with the Department of Advanced Education and Skills are leading a delegation to participate in Working International Expo skills recruitment fairs in London, England, and Dublin, Ireland.

These two recruitment fairs in London and Dublin will showcase Newfoundland and Labrador and attract potential employees. While it is always a top priority to employ Newfoundlanders and Labradorians first, that is not always possible. These recruitment fairs will help us fill job categories where particular skills are needed so new workers can come to this province to work, live and raise families.
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills

Officials will attend the event in London, October 10-11, and in Dublin on October 14. Working International Expo is a world-leading organizer of international job migration events and provides candidates who are motivated, skilled and immediately available. Each year more than 60,000 skilled individuals attend events with resumes in hand, eager to find jobs, build careers and start new and better lives in countries like Canada.

We are excited to travel to London and Dublin to discuss with potential workers about what Franchise Management Inc. can offer as a restaurant employer, and also what Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer as a great place to settle, work and raise a family. The Working International Expos provide a valuable opportunity to collaborate with the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism to showcase all that this province features for career opportunities and quality of life.
- Rachael Wheelan, Director of Human Resources, Franchise Management Inc.

In November 2014, a delegation from Newfoundland and Labrador attended Working International Expo in London and Dublin to attract workers. Approximately 30 people who connected with employers in this province are now working and living in Newfoundland and Labrador with their families. They are employed as powerline technicians, hotel managers, food service managers, cooks and personal care attendants.

Recruiting abroad assists the Express Entry Skilled Worker Category which supports the Immigration Action Plan under the Population Growth Strategy. The category is under the Provincial Nominee Program and is a faster way to process economic immigration applications. Employers will have access to a pool of candidates who fit labour market needs, and they will be able to use an improved National Job Bank website to connect Express Entry candidates with eligible employers.
