Provincial Government Releases New Roadmap for Apprenticeship Renewal

The commitment to supporting the skilled trades, apprentices and employers remains strong for the Provincial Government with the release today of Train Here: A Roadmap for Apprenticeship Renewal. As a key component under the Population Growth Strategy, Train Here outlines a new vision for the skilled trades in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“A central focus of the Provincial Government is to help ensure that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians find meaningful employment so they can study, work and raise a family right here at home. It is through Train Here that we are helping to better ensure the province has a skilled and educated population. Actions in this document will help streamline the apprenticeship process, as well as increase flexibility of the system. This new vision for our province’s apprenticeship system will help enhance the journey for both individuals and employers involved in the skilled trades.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills

The new roadmap includes eight key initiatives, which are:

  • Improving labour mobility for apprentices;
  • Improving log books;
  • Improving pre-apprenticeship experiences;
  • Simplifying the apprenticeship process;
  • Exploring alternative approaches to block training;
  • Improving red seal examination completion rates;
  • Engaging youth in apprenticeship; and
  • Establishing a new employer apprenticeship grant.

“The importance of engagement and dialogue with those who are directly involved in the skilled trades is a vital tool to ensure the voices of all involved are heard and taken into consideration. Train Here exemplifies the positive outcomes of successful consultations, and will benefit the skilled trades here in our province for years to come.”
-Paul Dube, Executive Director, Merit Contractors Association

Train Here was developed based on input received from industry, employers and individuals in the skilled trades throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Dialogue will continue through a number of initiatives, including the workforce development roundtable sessions being held across the province in the coming months. These sessions will help ensure the Provincial Government remains responsive to meeting the needs of the workforce, including the apprenticeship system.

“Ensuring that females have the information, experience, and supports needed to succeed in apprenticeship is critical. The Train Here initiatives are in direct alignment with the programs and services delivered by our organization to increase women's participation in trades. Alternative approaches to block training, as well as improvements in labour mobility and completion rates for red seal exams, will alleviate some challenges and support retention and advancement of female apprentices.”
- Cheri Butt, Executive Director of Women in Resource Development

Through Budget 2015, Train Here and other skilled trade development programs are supported through approximately $20 million in funding. For more information on Train Here: A Roadmap for Apprenticeship Renewal, visit www.gov.nl.ca/aes.
