Provincial Government Providing Employment Supports to Employees of Teck Resources Duck Pond Operations

Officials with the Department of Advanced Education and Skills have met with Teck Resources to offer employment supports and services for approximately 320 employees affected by the closure of the company’s Duck Pond mine in Millertown, which took effect June 30, 2015.

“We are sensitive to the challenges and concerns of those affected and we will work with Teck Resources to offer employment services and supports. We have dedicated staff resources in our Grand Falls-Windsor office to assist displaced workers in pursuing retraining or seeking new employment opportunities. We will continue to work with the company and other government departments to offer all available supports to affected employees.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills

The Department of Advanced Education and Skills has created an employee and skills assessment inventory to help determine skills levels and potential training requirements of the impacted workers. This information will help tailor services and supports to the specific needs of employees and match displaced workers to positions in the province. The department has also participated with Teck Resources to deliver information sessions for the impacted employees.

The Provincial Government and Teck Resources have established a committee to provide oversight on the closure of the Duck Pond mind and to work with communities in the area.

“Over the past decade, Teck Resources has contributed significantly to the mining industry and to the economy of central Newfoundland. Although this closure was expected and well-planned, it is still difficult for affected workers, families and communities. There continues to be considerable mineral exploration activity in central Newfoundland that may lead to the possibility of new mines in the area. We will continue to encourage mineral exploration investment throughout the province and support industry wherever possible.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources
