Regional Investments Support Provincial Transportation Network

Replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge Proceeding with Tender

Replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge is proceeding with a tender seeking a contractor to construct a new bridge. This tender builds on the approximately $2 million that has been spent to date to relocate utilities and realign approaches that lead to both sides of the new bridge, which is required work in the construction of a new bridge.

“The Sir Robert Bond Bridge is a vital part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s transportation network as it is the only east-west highway link that crosses the Exploits River. Leading up to this tender, a significant amount of work has been completed to prepare for the actual bridge construction phase of this project. By calling the tender at this time we are ensuring a contractor will be in place to start early in the 2015 construction season.”
- The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Transportation and Works

The new 210 metre bridge will take two construction seasons to complete and is a cost-shared project with the Federal Government. It will also be three metres wider than the existing 7.32 metre wide bridge.

“I am pleased that our government has called a tender for the replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge. This will be welcomed news to local residents and to those travelling across our province. The new bridge will certainly make crossing the Exploits River easier and safer.”
- Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits

While the new bridge is under construction, the existing bridge will be maintained and receive any required repair work to ensure it remains safe. Upon completion of the new bridge, the existing structure will be completely removed.

Since 2011, more than $100 million has been invested in bridge replacement and repair projects. Currently, contracts have been awarded for the replacement of seven bridges and rehabilitation of 16 bridges. Replaced bridges have included Bonavista Water Supply Bridge and Glenwood East Overpass near Appleton, while rehabilitated bridges included Chapel Arm Bridge, Eddie’s Cove East Bridge and Eddie’s Cove West Bridge.
