Providing Key Public Services Supports Vibrant Communities

Highway and Provincial Clean Up Efforts to Begin Soon

On Sunday, June 29, the Department of Transportation and Works will begin highway clean up efforts along the Outer Ring Road. In order to create the safest possible conditions for workers and motorists, this clean up will require the closure of four kilometres of road on the Outer Ring Road between Logy Bay Road and Portugal Cove Road, from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

“The safety of our employees continues to be a priority for our department, so we must take measures to ensure they are not vulnerable while working on our roadways. The clean up of high traffic, high speed highways such as the Outer Ring Road is one of the most dangerous activities for our employees and requires the closure of sections of highway. We are aware of the impact this has on the travelling public and targeted a Sunday as it is the day of the week with the least traffic.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

The clean up for other sections of the Outer Ring Road will be outlined at a future date. Additionally, the area along Pitts Memorial Drive will be targeted in July while clean up activities in other areas of the province are a part of the department’s summer maintenance program. Clean up activities will also be communicated by public notices and social media.

“We all contribute to maintaining the beauty of our province and we encourage people to make a serious effort to stop littering. Motorists must ensure that cargo is properly secured to prevent highway litter and pollution. As Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, let’s work together to maintain the beauty of our environment and stop allowing garbage to litter our landscapes.”
- Minister McGrath

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook allocates approximately $200 million to improvements in provincial highways and roads. This includes investments in the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, Trans Labrador Highway, and summer maintenance program.
