Infrastructure Investments Support Community and Economic Development

Contracts Totalling $1.7 Million Awarded for Transportation Improvements in Central Newfoundland

Residential and commercial traffic travelling on the Trans Canada Highway in central Newfoundland will benefit from the replacement of Glenwood East Overpass with a trailway underpass and the rehabilitation of three kilometres on Gander Bay Road. The total cost of these initiatives is $1.7 million.

“Through a combined investment of $1.7 million, we are highlighting our government’s commitment to making improvements to transportation infrastructure that supports the free-flow of goods and people. The replacement of the existing Glenwood East Overpass, which is more commonly known as the Appleton Bridge, is much needed as this part of the Trans Canada Highway is the only east-west link in the area.
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

Replacement of the Glenwood East Overpass will be completed this year by Mike Kelly and Sons at a cost of $681,000. The rehabilitation of three kilometres of Gander Bay Road between kilometres 27.6 and 30.6 will be done by J-1 Contracting.

“The replacement of the Glenwood East Overpass and construction of a trailway underpass is welcome news. Residents of Glenwood and Appleton use the bridge daily during their commute to Gander and have been voicing their concerns about the need for replacement infrastructure. This investment should address those concerns. Further upgrades of the Gander Bay Road will also contribute to the improved travelling experience in the area.”
- The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for Gander

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook provides more than $81 million for the Provincial Road Improvement Program, representing one of the largest investments to date to facilitate upgrades and enhancements to provincial roads, highways and bridges.
