Significant Investments in Road Infrastructure Support Communities and Regions

Extensive Improvements Coming to Transportation Infrastructure in Central Newfoundland

Extensive improvements to highway and road infrastructure are planned for Central Newfoundland this year. These improvements are highlighted by the replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge and Stoney Brook Bridge, along with repaving and asphalt repairs to sections of the Trans Canada Highway.

“With one of the largest ever investments being made this year in the Provincial Road Improvement Program, there is a substantial volume of work taking place throughout Newfoundland and Labrador that will benefit the traveling public and commercial traffic. In Central Newfoundland, we are replacing the heavily-traveled Sir Robert Bond Bridge and advancing a series of initiatives that will improve the region’s highway and road infrastructure.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

The tender will include asphalt repairs to the Trans Canada Highway between the Sir Robert Bond Bridge and Bishop’s Falls West Access area, and asphalt leveling on Route 350 from Point Leamington towards Leading Tickles. The replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge is a cost-shared project with the Federal Government.

“These investments on Route 350, the Trans Canada Highway, and replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge are great news for the people of the district of Exploits and the whole province. The Sir Robert Bond Bridge is a vital link for the traveling public and for moving freight across the island. These improvements will certainly provide a more comfortable drive for residents, tourists, and businesses.”
- Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits

In Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans, approximately two kilometres of Route 370, Buchans Junction towards Buchans will be resurfaced.

“On behalf of the residents and travelers using this infrastructure, I welcome the continued progress on the Buchans Highway. Improvements and upgrades such as these make for a safer, more pleasurable drive for all who use our roadways.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans

This year’s road improvement initiatives in Central Newfoundland will also include upgrades to approximately 1.5 kilometres of Wooddale Road and 1.3 kilometres of rehabilitation of Port Anson Road.

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook includes infrastructure investments totaling $852.7 million, which reflects the significance of a well-developed transportation network and access to infrastructure to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
