Significant Road Improvements Tendered for Burin Peninsula

Motorists travelling on the Burin Peninsula will benefit from several road improvement initiatives that will take place in the 2014 road construction season through a series of tenders announced today by the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works.

“Residents and businesses on the Burin Peninsula, as well as those travelling to the region, will see significant improvements made to local roads and highways this road construction season. Initiatives taken this year reflect our government’s focus on strengthening the province’s transportation network and ensuring that contractors are able to fully utilize the construction season with earlier tenders than in years past.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

A tender for road work in the Grand Bank area will include upgrading and paving of approximately 2.6 kilometres of Route 210 from Grand Bank towards Molliers, asphalt leveling on approximately 1.5 kilometres of Route 220 between Lamaline and Point May, and approximately 1.5 kilometres of asphalt leveling on Route 220 through the community of Fortune.

A tender will soon be released for the demolition of the old Grand Bank hospital, as well as replacement of a panel bridge on Route 220-11 in Corbin.

“Over the past several years we have made significant gains in improving our roads and highways and the upgrades to Route 210 are yet another significant move forward. I will continue to work on important road projects and other initiatives, such as the demolition of the Old Grand Bank Cottage Hospital, identified throughout the area.”
-The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education and MHA for Grand Bank

In the coming weeks another tender will be issued for the replacement of a timber bridge with an aluminum bridge structure on Route 210-15 in the community of Brookside, as well upgrades and paving to a section of Route 210-18, Parker’s Cove Road totalling two kilometres, and improvements to a section of Route 210 to provide a turning lane to the new medical clinic near Boat Harbour.

“Ongoing road infrastructure upgrades are an important part the area's needs. Maintaining these roads, along with this additional work, speaks to our government's commitment to providing a quality transportation network.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Burin - Placentia West
