Significant Transportation Investments Support a Vibrant Economy

Glenwood East Overpass on the TCH to be Replaced

Construction will soon begin to replace Glenwood East Overpass, just east of Appleton on the Trans Canada Highway. Replacement of aging infrastructure is a key component of strengthening the overall transportation network in this region of the province.

“Our investment of $81 million this year represents one of the largest Provincial Road Improvement Programs to date. This significant budget allocation enables us to work with contractors to upgrade and enhance our provincial highway network including major trunk roads, community access roads and local roads, the Trans Canada Highway as well as the rehabilitation and replacement of bridges.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

The project tender, announced today by Minister McGrath while speaking at a Gander Chamber of Commerce luncheon, calls to remove the Glenwood East Overpass and replace it with a trailway underpass. The closing date for this tender is April 29. Minister McGrath also indicated at the announcement that a tender will soon be released for upgrades to the Gander Bay Road.

“This is great news for the region. The Trans Canada Highway is a very important part of our provincial transportation network and this project will provide a much better driving experience for all residents and visitors travelling this section of the highway.”
- The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for Gander

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook includes infrastructure investments totalling $852.7 million, which reflects the significance of a well-developed transportation network and access to infrastructure to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
