Investments in Road Infrastructure Support Economic Activity

Road Tender Announced for Placentia-St. Mary’s

A tender for road upgrades for Placentia-St. Mary’s was announced today by the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works, in Colinet. This tender is a part of the Provincial Government’s approach to releasing tenders earlier in the year providing contractors with the opportunity to fully utilize the construction season and advance important road improvement projects.

“The exciting industry, economic and tourism growth in Placentia-St. Mary’s is giving rise to new demands for upgrades to the region’s roads and highways. To support this growth, and to ensure that all of the regions benefit from it, we are making a significant investment in road upgrades in the district by calling tenders for Route 91 and a section of Markland Road. By issuing the tender earlier in the year we are giving contractors a head start on advancing this important work.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

The contract will extend two years and be for upgrades of more than 20 kilometres of Route 91 to Southeast Placentia and a section of Markland Road.

“Opening up Route 91 from St. Mary’s Bay to Placentia as well as further improvements to Markland Road will have great strategic economic significance for both regions. It will provide huge benefits to the whole district in terms of tourism, access to employment as well as community services. I am extremely pleased with this recognition by government and the corresponding significant investment.”
- The Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General and MHA for Placentia-St. Mary’s

Budget 2014 Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook provides more than $81 million for the Provincial Road Improvement Program, representing one of the largest investments to date to facilitate upgrades and enhancements to provincial roads, highways and bridges.
