Conception Bay South Bypass Extension Officially Opens Today

With construction now complete, the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works, cut the ribbon and officially opened the Conception Bay South (CBS) Bypass extension today.

“The CBS Bypass is a very important piece of highway infrastructure that will significantly enhance the flow of traffic in the region,” said Minister McGrath. “Traffic volumes on the Avalon Peninsula have increased substantially in recent years generated by unprecedented economic growth. The Provincial Government continues to invest in infrastructure to stimulate further growth in all regions of the province.”

The $25.3 million project spans from Legion Road to Seal Cove representing a total distance of 5.6 kilometres. The Provincial Government contributed $18.8 million and the Government of Canada contributed $6.5 million through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund.

“This new stretch of highway will reduce road congestion and more importantly will improve road safety for Newfoundlanders and visitors alike,” said the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). “Our government is pleased to support infrastructure projects, like this one, that create jobs and stimulate the local economy.”

Through Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future, Provincial Government spending will exceed $866 million in infrastructure investments to help drive economic activity and generate 5,330 person years of employment.

Through the $4 billion Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund, the Government of Canada works with provincial, territorial and municipal governments, as well as with the private sector, to meet strategic infrastructure needs across the country. The Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund supports large-scale strategic infrastructure projects that improve quality of life and further sustainable growth.
