Sound Fiscal Management Maximizes Infrastructure Investment

$30 Million Commitment Ensures an Early Start for Provincial Road Improvement Program in 2014

The Provincial Government is ensuring an early start for road construction projects province-wide this year with a commitment of $30 million for 2014.

“Our investment of $30 million will provide for the issue of early tenders with the securing of road construction contracts in early spring. Contractors will benefit by retaining their qualified work force and starting work much earlier in the year. By utilizing the full construction season, the Provincial Government can maximize the overall road improvement program for 2014.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program provides funding for upgrades and enhancements to the provincial highway network including major trunk roads, community access roads and local roads, as well as routine maintenance on the Trans Canada Highway. Funding is also allocated for the rehabilitation and replacement of bridges. Project planning is underway and the issuing of tenders will begin in February.

The $30 million funding is a pre-commitment under the full Department of Transportation and Works budget plan for the year. Further funding allocations for the transportation infrastructure program will be determined during the annual budget process.

The Provincial Government remains committed to providing a safe and reliable transportation network throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries and building a vibrant economy.
