Local Choral Group Headed for World Stage

Lady Cove Women’s Choir Receives Funding to Attend World Choir Games

The voices of the Lady Cove Women’s Choir will be heard by people throughout the world when they attend the 2014 World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, July 7-14. Through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program, the choir received $10,000 to attend the event.

“The World Choir Games is a global choir festival featuring the biggest collection of internationally celebrated choirs, judges and composers. It is a great honour to be invited to this event, and it undoubtedly will open the door to many other opportunities for the group. I wish them much success as they show the entire world the incredible choral talent we have in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The Lady Cove Women’s Choir will compete in two championship categories - Female Choir and Sacred Music Accompanied. The choir was established in 2003 by Kellie Walsh and comprises professional musicians, music teachers, music students and community members with a wealth of choral experience. “We are so excited about our upcoming tour. In less than one week, Lady Cove is travelling to the world's capital of choral music - Riga, Latvia - to compete at the biggest choral competition in the world. We can hardly believe that we will be among 470 choirs from 70 countries, with thousands of choral music experts and many of the best choirs from around the globe. This trip has taken three years to plan and prepare for and would not be possible without the strong financial support of our Provincial Government.”
- Kellie Walsh, Founder and Artistic Director, Lady Cove Women’s Choir
