Online Contest Creates Buzz in Tourism Industry

Innovative Social Media Contest Attracts Potential Tourists

On March 28, as part of the province’s 2014 Find Yourself online marketing campaign, Newfoundland and Labrador tourism launched a new, innovative social media contest titled 30 Minute Window. In partnership with Air Canada, the contest runs until May 16. Since the launch, there has been an increase of more than 21 per cent to Facebook ‘likes,’ bringing the overall total to 68,144. To date, over 21,000 entries have been submitted.

“The 30 Minute Window contest was developed to create excitement among those who have shown interest in our province as a tourism destination, and place Newfoundland and Labrador top of mind as we move closer to peak travel season. The contest is well underway promoting multiple areas of the province, and providing suggestions of things for visitors to do and see while visiting. The 30 Minute Window contest helps our efforts to differentiate Newfoundland and Labrador from other tourism brands.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The contest window opens at 1:30 p.m. Newfoundland daylight time each Friday. During the 30 minute open window opportunity, a video is posted on the Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism Facebook page. To enter the contest, users need to visit the Facebook page in the 30 minute window that immediately follows each posting and like or comment on the video.

The prizes available to be won each Friday are two round-trip tickets for travel to Newfoundland and Labrador, courtesy of Air Canada.

“We are a leader in the country’s tourism industry and a destination of choice for many. We understand the importance of the thriving tourism industry we have in our province, and we will continue to look for new and innovative ways to get the message out there and encourage visitation.”
- Minister French
