Province Celebrates Aboriginal Culture and Heritage
Groups Encouraged to Apply to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program
Aboriginal organizations throughout the province are encouraged to apply to the Provincial Government’s Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program before the program deadline of April 15, 2014. Established in 2008, the program supports projects that preserve and protect Aboriginal practices and traditions.
“The Provincial Government is committed to the preservation of
Aboriginal culture. This program recognizes the importance of protecting
Aboriginal heritage and traditions and the value of passing them on to
future generations. We encourage groups to avail of this funding to help
celebrate and sustain the practices and cultures of Aboriginal peoples in
Newfoundland and Labrador.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation
The program was developed to help safeguard many aspects of Aboriginal traditions and culture, including language, traditional knowledge and skills, storytelling, music, games, customs and cultural beliefs.
“The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program contributes to the retention
of the values and cultural practices of Aboriginal people. Through these
initiatives, proud and honoured practices can be shared from one generation
of Aboriginal people to another. They will also help benefit the wider
population as they can secure a greater understanding of the spiritual and
cultural values of Aboriginal people.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador and
Aboriginal Affairs
Successful applicants may receive up to $15,000 for projects that document, pass on, and celebrate cultural traditions. For short-term events that recognize traditional culture, a grant of up to $1,000 is available. Applications are reviewed by the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from Aboriginal organizations.
