Investment in Recreation Brings Together Families and Communities

Minister Announces $200,000 for Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program

Over 100 community groups and organizations across the province are able to improve and implement recreation programming for senior citizens through a $200,000 investment by the Provincial Government for the Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was at the Kilbride Lions Community Centre earlier today to make the announcement.

“The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program enables our seniors to engage with their communities and become more socially and physically active. As a government, we are encouraged by how well received this program has been since it was established four years ago and delighted to see how this $200,000 investment supports and enhances the lives of our seniors.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program is designed to help seniors’ groups, communities, and recreation committees provide programs and services focused specifically on increasing physical and leisure activity for seniors. The Kilbride Lions Community Centre is among the 110 organizations that have been approved for a grant through the 2013-14 program. A full list of the organizations receiving funding can be found in the backgrounder below.

“This grant will be used to purchase additional new equipment and replace older equipment for the Gentle Gym Program that is offered at the Kilbride Lions Club Centre. The staff at the centre are hoping this investment will help them expand the program so that it can be offered to members of the Kilbride 50+ Club and any others in the community who may wish to participate.”
- John Dinn, MHA for Kilbride

Funding will be used for a variety of programming such as hiking, nature outings, community gardens, trail walking groups, indoor exercise classes, social gatherings and yoga.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
