Celebrating Heritage Strengthens Communities

Province Recognizes National Heritage Day

February 17 is National Heritage Day – a day to recognize and celebrate the country’s collective heritage. In honour of this special occasion, the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, congratulated the winners of the 2013-14 Heritage Day Poster Contest, an annual contest hosted by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Today, we celebrate our architectural heritage and the country’s many incredible historic places. For the past nine years, our children and youth have had the opportunity to highlight the province’s historic places and treasures through the Heritage Places Poster Contest. I commend all the contest winners, past and present, and the foundation for their continued efforts to preserve our province’s heritage.”

The overall winner was Colby Farrell, a Grade 11 student at Marystown Central High School in Marystown. Winners in other grade levels were: Primary – Savannah Skinner, Grade 2, Jakeman All Grade, Trout River; Elementary – Hae-Na Luther, Grade 6, Stella Maris Academy, Trepassey; and, Junior High – Erica Bailey, Grade 8, Bishop White School, Port Rexton.

“The foundation was very impressed with the both the quality and number of submissions that we received this year. Seven hundred students from 56 schools submitted artwork for consideration in this year’s contest. Colby’s winning submission is featured on the foundation’s official Heritage Day 2014 Poster.”
