Season Extension Activities Help Continued Growth of Tourism Industry
SnowWest 2014 Gets Underway in Western Newfoundland
From January 31 to February 9, SnowWest 2014 will bring a number of organized winter activities such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing and culinary events to various areas throughout western Newfoundland. This event is one of a number of initiatives developed by the Western Destination Management Organization and supported by the Provincial Government to help extend the tourism season in western Newfoundland.
“Since 2009, we have invested more than $670,000 throughout the
province to develop and promote tourism experiences beyond the traditional
season. Tourism is a growth industry – an industry that benefits virtually
every corner of this province. In an increasingly competitive marketplace,
it is more important than ever for Newfoundland and Labrador to have a plan
and provide investment so that the tourism industry can continue to grow.
SnowWest 2014 is a wonderful example of winter activities which help extend
tourism activity beyond the traditional peak season on the west coast of our
province.”
- The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation
The province’s support of season extension efforts has enabled partnerships with industry, government, municipalities and other stakeholder groups in the tourism industry. The extension activities will help the continued growth of the quantity and quality of the tourism sector based on the directions of the province’s 10-year strategy, Uncommon Potential – A Vision for Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism.
“Our organization is pleased to work closely with the Provincial
Government in our efforts to help extend the tourism season here in the
western region of the province. We know the quality of the extended season
products we have to offer to create memorable and meaningful experiences.
These extended season opportunities in the winter, spring and fall periods
help deliver our brand promise. Participating in these programs, among our
communities and within these social spaces, truly is where the magic is
happening.”
- Mark Lamswood, Executive Director, Western Destination Management
Organization
