Corner Brook Company Sentenced for Public Safety Violations

Service NL announced today that Western Building Products was sentenced Tuesday, November 4, in Corner Brook Provincial Court upon pleading guilty to a violation of the Public Safety Act and Electrical Regulations. The case arose as the result of an investigation by Service NL’s western regional office in Corner Brook.

In March 2014, Service NL staff investigated unauthorized electrical work on a home, identifying a public safety issue. The company, which had worked on the home, had cut screws off in a meter base in order to install siding behind the base. This practice can cause a safety hazard to anyone who may have to work in the area, as the screws that are cut off may fall into the electrical meter base. The investigation identified the company responsible and a charge was laid under section 36(1)(a) of the Public Safety Act for allowing an unqualified person/company to do electrical work.

The company pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to pay $500 in fines and a 30 per cent victim fine surcharge.

Service NL advises the public that every qualified electrician who is conducting electrical work in the province is required to be registered with Service NL and will have a registration card containing their registration number. Information on registered contractors can be found at www.servicenl.gov.nl.ca/licenses/electrical/index.html.
