Board Members Appointed to Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission

The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission, today announced appointments to the commission’s Board of Directors. Three new members have been appointed and four members have been re-appointed to continue equal representation on behalf of the public, employers, and workers.

“These highly qualified and experienced individuals are an asset to the board and will serve the public, employers and workers well during their terms. These board members bring leadership to the development of policies and programs that enhance workplace health and safety in the province.”

The following individuals have been appointed or re-appointed:

  • Dawn Learning, National Staff Representative of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, appointed as Worker Representative for a two-year term;
  • Gregory Viscount, General Manager of Ocean Choice International and board member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council, appointed as Employer Representative for a three-year term;
  • Madonna Stamp, advocate for injured workers, appointed as Public Representative for a three-year term;
  • Grant Barnes, retired Captain of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, re-appointed as Worker Representative for a three-year term;
  • Greg Pretty, Director with the Industrial Offshore Sector of Fish, Food and Allied Workers/Unifor, re-appointed as Worker Representative for a three-year term;
  • John Peddle, President/owner of AMP Associates (88) Ltd and founding member/past chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council, re-appointed as Employer Representative for a two-year term; and
  • Elizabeth Forward, former Chief Operating Officer for the Central Regional Integrated Health Authority, re-appointed as Public Representative for a three-year term.

The commission is an employer-funded, no-fault insurance system that promotes safe and healthy workplaces, provides return-to-work programs and fair compensation to injured workers and their dependents. The commission serves approximately 13,000 injured workers and over 19,000 employers in Newfoundland and Labrador.

BACKGROUNDER
WHSCC Board Appointments

Dawn Learning, Worker Representative
Ms. Learning is a resident of St. John’s and a National Staff Representative of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). She is a CUPE Ombudsperson, a CUPE National Parliamentarian and has served on the NL Provincial Government Pension Investment Committee.

Gregory Viscount B.Comm, CA, Employer Representative
Mr. Viscount is a resident of St. John’s and is the General Manager of Ocean Choice International. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employer’s Council, Vice-Chair of the Association of Seafood Producers and a member of the Board of Directors for One Ocean, an inter-industry liaison organization for the fishing and petroleum industries.

Madonna Stamp, Public Representative
Ms. Stamp is a resident of St. Vincent’s-St. Stephen’s-Peter’s River and is a former town clerk for the town. She was Citizen of the Year and was awarded the Hebron Silver Coin for Safety for her work advocating for safer workplaces. She has personal experience with the workers’ compensation system as her husband, Pat Stamp, suffered 3rd and 4th degree burns from a workplace incident in 2006.

Grant Barnes, Worker Representative
Mr. Barnes is a resident of Terra Nova and is a retired captain with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department. He is also a former president of the CBS Lions Club and has served on the Human Rights Committee of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Greg Pretty, Worker Representative
Mr. Pretty is a resident of St. John’s. He is a director with the Industrial Offshore Sector of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers/Unifor. Mr. Pretty is the labour co-chair of the provincial Labour-Management Arbitration Committee and a director of Metro Business Opportunities for St. John’s.

John Peddle, Employer Representative
Mr. Peddle is a resident of St. John’s and is a founding member and past chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employers Council, former Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association and President/owner of AMP Associates (88) Ltd.

Elizabeth Forward, Public Representative
Ms. Forward is a resident of Conception Bay South and is a former Chief Operating Officer for the Central Regional Integrated Health Authority. She has served on the Newfoundland Labrador Occupational Therapy Board and other health-related boards.
