Responsible Decisions for Workers and Employers Support A Vibrant Economy

Minister Releases Workers Compensation Review Report for Public Comment

The Provincial Government has released the review into the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation system, Working Together – Safe, Accountable, Sustainable. The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Statutory Review Committee provided the report to the Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission, in January following last year’s extensive public consultation process.

“The statutory review is an important component of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation system as it brings together the views of the province's workers, employers and other interested parties to identify potential improvements to the system. There are in total 42 policy recommendations from the review committee and an additional 90 recommendations related to the comprehensive review of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act. These recommendations affect workers and employers so it is important that we provide members of the public with an opportunity to respond to these recommendations.”
- The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission

The Working Together – Safe, Accountable, Sustainable report is available on the Labour Relations Agency website at //www.gov.nl.ca/lra/workingtogether. Printed copies will be sent to all participants of the public consultation process. Members of the public may call 709-729-7458 or toll-free 1-877-563-1063 to request a printed copy. Written responses to the report will be accepted up to March 14, 2014. These can be emailed to workingtogether@gov.nl.ca or mailed to:

Written submissions will be considered as the Provincial Government proceeds with an analysis of the recommendations. These submissions and analysis will form the basis of the Provincial Government’s action plan to respond to the recommendations of the report.

“Today, the workers’ compensation system in this province is fundamentally stronger than at any point in the last decade with general satisfaction with the system steadily increasing and 97 per cent of all claims submitted to the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission, with the proper information, being accepted. We want the system to continue in this direction and we believe that working together with our stakeholders and the public we can continue to develop a system that is safe, accountable and sustainable.”
- Minister Crummell
