Leading a Sustainable and Diversified Forest Sector
New Strategy Outlines Plan for Managing Provincial Forest Resource
The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, today launched the new 10-year provincial sustainable forest management strategy during the Canadian Institute of Forestry, Newfoundland and Labrador Section, Annual General Meeting.
“Newfoundland and Labrador’s new provincial forest management strategy, Growing our Renewable and Sustainable Forest Economy, is the guiding document upon which forest resource development will occur over the next decade. I thank the many stakeholders who provided their input to the plan through our extensive consultation process. With this strategy, the Provincial Government will protect the natural forest resource, and also guide the forest industry in its development of a high value, diversified sector providing continued economic benefits to rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The strategy emerged through wide consultation with industry, interested groups and organizations, and the public. The 10-year planning scope provides the appropriate timeframe to research, design, and implement the new policies outlined in this strategy.

Forestry is a dynamic sector and this strategy outlines the framework for the next decade for our province. With the development of this strategy the Provincial Government is demonstrating its firm commitment and vision for the forest sector.”

Newfoundland and Labrador’s forest sector is a major contributor to the provincial economy, employing 5,500 people through direct and indirect employment. The industry is valued at over $250 million annually.
