Growing a Diversified Agriculture Industry

Provincial and Federal Governments Invest in Agrifoods and Garden Show

The annual Agrifoods and Garden Show, the largest agriculture event in the province, will receive $150,000 in funding from the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Growing Forward 2 Agreement, through the Market Development Initiative. Each year, the show helps increase awareness about the agriculture and agrifoods industry, particularly with regards to its economic contribution and diversity within the province.

“The Provincial Government remains committed to further developing the agriculture and agrifoods industry which employs 6,500 men and women and contributes more than $500 million to the provincial economy annually. The Agrifoods and Garden Show is a great opportunity for residents to meet farmers, sample local produce and learn more about the industry overall.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency

Total funding allocated by the federal and provincial governments under Growing Forward 2 is $37 million for innovation, competitiveness and market development for the province’s agriculture and agrifoods industry.

“Our Government is proud to partner in this effort to highlight agriculture as a major and vibrant part of life in Newfoundland and Labrador. This is an opportunity to see and hear this success story right at the source, from the men and women who work on the farms and across the industry.”
- The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Federal Agriculture Minister

The Agrifoods and Garden Show is organized by the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture and is being held this year at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay from October 3 to 5.

“This event gives the public an opportunity to meet farmers and to see what the agriculture industry has to offer. This year’s agriculture awareness program will also give students in Grades 3 and 4 in the metro area a full day of agriculture-related programming, educating them about where their food comes from.”
- Eugene Legge, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture
