Supporting Forest Resources in Newfoundland and Labrador

National Forest Week Celebrates Value of Forest Sector

The Provincial Government is inviting residents to celebrate National Forest Week, from September 21 to 27. The theme, Sunrise in the Forest, recognizes an industry that is diverse, innovative, sustainable and renewable.

“As stewards of forest resources in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government is working closely with industry to ensure the sustainability of the forestry sector for decades to come. National Forest Week provides the opportunity for each of us to recognize the tremendous value of the industry which now stands at $250 million in our province and has over 5,500 people directly and indirectly employed in sawmilling, woods contracting, newsprint manufacturing and value-added enterprises.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency

Activities are planned throughout the province to celebrate National Forest Week. For example, Grade 5 students in the Humber Valley-Bay of Islands area have been invited to Explore Forestry Day on September 24, which includes forestry-related demonstrations, games, a barbeque and a celebration of Smokey Bear’s birthday at Margaret Bowater Park. Explore Forestry Day is open to the public and will also include a tree planting ceremony.

Also during the week, the winners of the National Forest Week poster contest will be announced and the artwork submitted by Grade 5 students unveiled in the 2015 National Forest Week Calendar.
