Public Advisory: Residents Reminded to be Fire Smart on Canada Day Holiday

The Department of Natural Resources is reminding residents to be responsible when lighting or handling any type of outdoor fire during Canada Day celebrations.

Many people celebrate the Canada Day holiday at cabins, cottages and homes with an outdoor fire as part of the festivities. To help protect the forest, homes and personal property, the department asks residents to remember the following safety tips:

  • Never leave any fire unattended.
  • Always have an adequate supply of water on hand to completely extinguish your fire.
  • Ensure campfires and charcoals are extinguished.
  • Properly extinguish and discard all smoking materials.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and be careful when lighting fireworks.
  • Fireworks should only be used outdoors.
  • Always have water ready if you are using fireworks.
  • Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor, fire resistant garbage can away from buildings and flammable materials.
A toll-free number is available to report forest fires during forest fire season. The number is 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
