The following statement was made today by the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources:

Minister Comments on Public Utilities Board Interim Report

We have received the interim report by the Public Utilities Board as part of their investigation into supply issues and power outages on the Island Interconnected System. Officials from the Provincial Government are now in the process of reviewing the report.

We appreciate the recommendations of the Public Utilities Board as they relate to technical advice around improving the electricity system in the province. The work of the Public Utilities Board, as well as reviews undertaken by the Provincial Government, Liberty Consulting Group, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, and Newfoundland Power, will strengthen the province’s electricity system to ensure reliability as we transition to an interconnected system.

Restoring public confidence in the province’s electricity system is of utmost importance to our government. We are moving forward with an independent review which will explore the management, regulation and operation of the system overall. This review is intended to complement, rather than duplicate, the efforts of the Public Utilities Board. We have received and are currently reviewing nine detailed and comprehensive proposals from interested consultants. The department will announce the selected consultant when that process has concluded.
