Encouraging Mineral Resource Development
Province Hailed as Exploration Destination at International Convention and Trade Show
Prospects in Newfoundland and Labrador’s mineral exploration sector and opportunities for investment were highlighted this week at the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) international mineral convention and trade show.
“In a global survey released this week by the Fraser Institute, the province ranked ninth worldwide as one of the most attractive jurisdictions for investment in mining. These findings were evident to me at PDAC. I met with many companies active in the province and other companies interested in finding out more about Newfoundland and Labrador. It was very clear that there is strong interest in the province’s exploration and development potential which will contribute to the continued growth and long-term sustainability of the mining industry.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources
The provincial delegation included officials from the Department of Natural Resources, Mining Industry NL, exploration companies with projects based in the province, prospectors, and supply firms. Meetings were held with Vale Canada, Labrador Iron Mines and Teck Resources Limited to discuss the status of projects underway in the province and long-term development plans. Meetings were also held with officials from the China Ministry of Lands and Resources on existing and future opportunities for involvement in the mineral sector and builds on previous discussions with the Chinese government.
Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries and building a vibrant economy.
