Securing a Prosperous Future for Young Newfoundlanders and Labradorians

Oil and Gas Week Kicks Off in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Provincial Government today joined its partners in industry and academia at Memorial University in St. John’s to kick off Oil and Gas Week and celebrate the economic and employment opportunities available in Newfoundland and Labrador’s petroleum sector.

“As the largest contributor to the provincial GDP at 33 per cent with oil production value of over $8 billion and royalty revenues of $2 billion in 2012, the petroleum industry is just one of the many resource sectors driving employment and business activity in Newfoundland and Labrador. Oil and Gas Week is an opportunity to work together with our partners to showcase the province’s continued growth and the opportunities that will sustain the industry long into the future, especially for students interested in pursuing a career in this vibrant industry.”
- The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources

The official launch and opening reception was hosted by the Earth Sciences Department of Memorial University in the third floor atrium of the Alexander Murray Building. Students and residents alike are encouraged to learn more about the industry through a variety of activities happening as part of Oil and Gas Week. Events include Energy Day, a free public lecture, and Geoscience Day. Further information on the week’s events is available at www.noia.ca/Industry-Info/NL-Oil-Gas-Week/Calendar-of-Events/

Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries and building a vibrant economy.
