Investing in Infrastructure to Strengthen Communities

$4.5 Million Investment Improves Municipal Infrastructure in the District of Placentia - St. Mary’s

The District of Placentia - St. Mary’s is benefiting from a $4.5 million cost-shared investment to upgrade water and sewer systems and improve roads in the area. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, along with the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s.

“Improving water, sewer and road infrastructure is important for the sustainability of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. This $4.5 million investment will ensure communities in the District of Placentia - St. Mary’s have safe and reliable services for the benefit of all residents. As a government, we will continue to work with communities as they identify key projects which will enable them to grow and attract new families and businesses.”

The $4.5 million is allocated as follows:

  • $3.1 million in multi-year capital works funding for the replacement of the water system, replacement of the Castle Hill water storage tank and repairs to the wave wall in the Town of Placentia;
  • $425,000 for water system upgrades in the Town of Riverhead;
  • $400,000 for the replacement of water lines in the Town of St. Bride’s;
  • $328,000 for water and sewer system upgrades as well as for the completion of the water and sewer project on Main Street in the Town of Whitbourne; and
  • $260,000 for road improvements in the Town of Colinet.

As part of investments through Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook, the Provincial Government has allocated $200 million for a three-year program for municipal infrastructure projects.

QUICK FACTS

  • A $4.5 million cost-shared investment is being made for capital works projects in the District of Placentia - St. Mary’s.
  • Funding for the multi-year investment in Placentia is being cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 80 per cent and the Town of Placentia providing 20 per cent.
  • Funding for the projects in Riverhead, St. Bride’s, Whitbourne and Colinet is cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent and the towns each covering their 10 per cent share.
  • As part of Budget 2014 investments, the Provincial Government has allocated $200 million for a three-year program for municipal infrastructure projects.
