Supporting Fire Services in Rural Communities

Over $282,000 Announced to Improve Fire Services in the District of The Straits - White Bay North

The Provincial Government is investing $282,000 to enhance fire and emergency services in the District of The Straits - White Bay North. The funding will be used for the purchase of a new rescue pumper truck for the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board and firefighting equipment for the communities of Roddickton and St. Lunaire-Griquet.

“The hard work of the volunteer firefighters throughout The Straits - White Bay North is critical to public safety. This $282,000 investment will be used to purchase a new rescue pumper truck and equipment, which will enhance fire protection for families and businesses throughout the region. The services provided by the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board clearly demonstrate the benefits of regionalization and working together. I applaud the Board of Directors, the committee, and the Straits Fire Department for their hard work in serving residents from Anchor Point to Eddies Cove East.”
- The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-NL

The funding announced today will be used to purchase a new rescue pumper truck and four sets of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board, two Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBAs) with two spare cylinders for Roddickton and six new pagers for St. Lunaire-Griquet.

“The Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board is pleased to be a leader in regionalization in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through the addition of this new firefighting vehicle and safety equipment, we will be in a better position to serve our residents in the future. We are looking forward to the spring of 2015 when the new rescue pumper truck will be delivered to the region.”
- Doug Mills, Chair of Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board

The example set by the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board demonstrates the importance of working together to share services in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

In recent months, a number of communities have undertaken fire service regionalization efforts, including the municipalities of Port au Port West-Aguathuna-Felix Cove, Port au Port East, Fox Island River-Point au Mal, Boswarlos and Campbell’s Creek, and six fire departments in the Isle aux Morts, Port aux Basques area; Cape Ray, Channel-Port Aux Basques, Margaree Fox Roost, Isle Aux Morts, Burnt Islands and Rose Blanche.

The Provincial Government is committed to the efficient, effective delivery of fire protection services and to assisting local governments and fire departments to determine if sharing services may enhance the current levels of protection in their regions.
