$12.5 Million in Capital Works Funding to Benefit District of Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans

The Provincial Government is committed to supporting municipal infrastructure upgrades across the province and is investing $12.5 million in capital works funding in the District of Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans, cost-shared with local communities. The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, made the announcement today, joined by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans.

“Improving municipal infrastructure is vital for the sustainability of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. This investment of $12.5 million will assist the residents of the Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans region with improvements to roads, water and sewer services as well as enhancements to recreation infrastructure. Government remains focused on these types of initiatives and has allocated $650 million to more than 1,200 municipal infrastructure projects between 2008 and 2013.”

The following is a breakdown of the $12.5 million investment:

  • $11.5 million will be invested in the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor. Information on this investment is contained in the attached backgrounder;
  • $650,000 will be invested in the Town of Badger for the paving of Church Street, Sunset Drive and Main Street;
  • $229,000 in additional funding will be invested for the completion of a sewer system treatment project in Buchans Junction; and
  • $115,000 for paving in the Town of Millertown.

As part of investments through Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook, the Provincial Government has allocated $200 million for a three-year program for municipal infrastructure projects.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Provincial Government is investing $12.5 million for infrastructure improvements in the District of Grand Falls-Windsor - Buchans.
  • In Badger, Buchans Junction and Millertown, these projects are cost-shared with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the funding and the communities providing the remaining 10 per cent.
  • Funding for the multi-year investment in Grand Falls-Windsor is cost-shared, with the Provincial Government providing 70 per cent of the funding and the town providing 30 per cent.
