Increasing Fire Safety Services

New Rural Response Unit Announced for Heart’s Delight-Islington

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services- Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined last evening by the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Finance and MHA for Trinity - Bay de Verde, to announce a new rural response unit for Heart’s Delight-Islington.

“Enhancing fire safety in rural communities of Newfoundland and Labrador is a priority. As our province continues to attract new and diverse industries, it is important for the safety of our residents that our firefighters are prepared to respond to any type of emergency situation. To support the local fire department in Heart’s Delight-Islington, we are investing over $125,000, cost-shared with the town, for a new fire truck.”

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook includes $5 million in fire vehicle and equipment funding which is the largest investment ever made in this area.

The new rural response unit will be cost-shared with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of the funding and the municipality covering the remaining 10 per cent. This versatile, self-contained truck and pumping apparatus has foam capability, a 300 gallon water tank and is ideal for fire departments in smaller communities.

Since 2003, the Provincial Government contributed to the purchase of over 125 emergency response vehicles for communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
