Increasing Fire Safety for Families and Communities

Over $520,000 in Funding Announced for Fire Trucks in Grand Bank and Lawn

Volunteer firefighters play a significant role in public safety throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. To support this work the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education and MHA for Grand Bank, joined firefighters and officials from the community of Lawn on Sunday, July 20, and Grand Bank on Monday, July 21, to announce new pumper trucks for each community.

“The Provincial Government is committed to fire protection and emergency services that help to keep our communities safe and secure. As a result of this commitment, we are announcing an investment totalling over $520,000, for the purchase of new pumper trucks for the towns of Grand Bank and Lawn. Both trucks are due to arrive during the spring of 2015, and will be cost-shared between the Provincial Government and the towns.”

Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook includes $5 million in fire vehicle and equipment funding, which is the largest investment ever made in this area.

“Ensuring that our firefighters have access to the equipment they require is crucial to the safety of residents, homes and businesses in the communities of Grand Bank and Lawn. I applaud the town councils and fire departments in each community for their hard work which has made this announcement possible. The new pumper trucks will greatly enhance the ability of local firefighters to respond quickly and efficiently during emergency situations.”

The pumper trucks will be cost-shared with the Provincial Government providing 90 per cent of funding and the municipalities covering the remaining 10 per cent. The vehicles will be four-door, 1,050 gallon per minute trucks with Class A foam capability.

Between 2003 and 2013, the Provincial Government contributed to the purchase of 125 emergency response vehicles for communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
