Investing in Infrastructure for Families

Multi-million Dollar Investment Will Improve Recreational Infrastructure on the Burin Peninsula

With funding of more than $12 million from the Provincial and Federal Governments a 3,035 square metre multi-purpose recreational facility is being built in Marystown on the Burin Peninsula. The town is also contributing $2.4 million to the project. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency).

“Recreational infrastructure is one of the most important components of building strong and vibrant communities, and the Provincial Government is committed to supporting projects which will benefit not only residents of Marystown but also communities throughout the Burin Peninsula. This investment of over $12 million will fund a new world-class facility, which will be a valuable addition to the health and well-being of the community and its residents.”
- The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The facility will include a swimming pool, multi-purpose space and meeting rooms as well as a gym and an indoor walking track. The project cost includes the associated engineering and design costs as well as the construction costs of the overall facility.

“Our government is committed to working in partnership with provinces and communities to improve the lives of all Canadians. We are pleased to support projects, like the multi-purpose recreational facility on the Burin Peninsula, that create jobs and stimulate the economy through the construction of modern public infrastructure.”
- The Honourable Rob Moore, Regional Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency)

Positive developments in all sectors of the local economy have furthered the need for improved recreational facilities. This project will enhance the ability of the Town of Marystown to retain and attract both businesses and individuals to the municipality and surrounding region. It will also provide employment opportunities during the construction phase and when the facility is completed.

“We are very pleased with these federal and provincial investments that will support the construction of a much needed regional recreation centre here in Marystown. This new multi-purpose facility will serve people from all over the Burin Peninsula for many, many years to come.”
- Sam Synard, Mayor, Town of Marystown

Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $650 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. When federal and municipal contributions are included the total investment is in excess of $1 billion.
