Happy Valley-Goose Bay Receives Increase in Multi-Year Capital Works Funding

Today, the Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced a cost-shared investment of $7.5 million in multi-year capital works funding for the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Recognizing the importance of infrastructure renewal, this represents an increase of $1 million in the town’s multi-year capital works funding for 2014-17, when compared to the previous three-year period.

“Happy Valley-Goose Bay is an area of the province that is experiencing significant growth due to the proximity of the town to Muskrat Falls. The Provincial Government understands the infrastructure requirements in the region and the potential impact of having such a large scale mega project as Muskrat Falls in the town’s backyard. Included in the increased capital works funding is $200,000 in cost-shared funding which will be used to assist the town with phase two of their recreation study. It is important that residents have access to facilities to live healthy active lifestyles, which benefit all of us in the long run.”
-The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay initiated a study to look at recreation infrastructure and facilities in the town. Phase one of the study has been completed and released and phase two of the study will be undertaken from the cost-shared $200,000 allocation from the multi-year capital works program.

“As a government we are committed to renewing and enhancing infrastructure across the province, and we are demonstrating that through this funding increase. We recognize the challenges being faced through expansion and growth in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and the Provincial Government has engaged in meaningful dialogue with the town to address these areas. The $200,000 commitment to the phase two recreation study is one area that was identified, and which we are pleased to support through the town's increased multi-year funding allocation.”
-The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Phase one of the study involved a preliminary review of recreation infrastructure in the town and was jointly funded by the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

“The council of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has made recreation a priority and plans have been made that we will see a new top notch facility in town in the near future. I'm confident that this council will ensure that this project continues to move forward in a timely manner.”
- Keith Russell, MHA for Lake Melville

Phase two of the recreation study will include engineering pre-design work, programming identification of activities and an energy model analysis.

“I would like to thank the Provincial Government for the increase in multi-year capital works funding. This will assist the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay to begin to address its infrastructure deficit and I am excited to be moving along so quickly to phase two of our Wellness Centre initiative. I know that by continuing to work with all levels of government and private industry, we will see our vision of a revitalized community come to fruition.”
- Jamie Snook, Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay

As part of investments through Budget 2014: Shared Prosperity, Fair Society, Balanced Outlook, the Provincial Government has allocated $200 million for a three-year program for municipal infrastructure projects.
