Building Strong and Vibrant Communities

Provincial Government Announces Three-Year $200 Million Municipal Infrastructure Program Through Budget 2014

The Provincial Government will provide funding to communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, through a new three-year $200 million capital works program as part of Budget 2014. The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs made the announcement today at the Rotary Paradise Youth and Community Centre.

“This funding signifies the importance that our government places on investing in municipal infrastructure to sustain and foster the growth of communities. This new three-year $200 million program represents a significant investment in infrastructure across the province. Funding will be allocated to high-priority areas such as the delivery of clean drinking water, the improvement of roads and the upgrading of wastewater systems.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The 22 municipalities that will receive multi-year capital works funding will have their allocations within the next couple of weeks. In addition, municipal capital works project approvals for the remaining eligible municipalities will be issued by mid-April. Municipalities will now be able to issue tenders earlier than ever before which will allow them to take advantage of a longer construction season.

“The Provincial Government recognizes the challenges municipalities face with replacing and upgrading existing infrastructure and the enormous cost that is associated with it. We have listened to our community leaders, and through this announcement, we are providing significant funding which will assist municipalities in meeting the infrastructure needs of their residents.”
- Minister Kent

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
