Public Advisory: Adverse Weather Conditions Anticipated Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador

Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) wishes to advise residents to make an extra effort to clear drains and water outfalls as rainfall combined with snow melt is anticipated due to the approaching adverse weather system, and to be cautious around coastlines and waterways over the coming days.

“On the heels of a recent blizzard and a very serious power outage, it is important that individuals and communities take precautions to address the forecasted weather over the coming days,” said the Honourable Steve Kent, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador. “By taking the necessary preventive measures immediately, Newfoundland and Labrador can lessen the potential negative impacts the weather may bring in the future. I encourage everyone to take these potential risks very seriously for the safety and security of the people of our province.”

Officials with Environment Canada are forecasting a wide variety of weather conditions to impact the various regions of Newfoundland and Labrador today, tonight and into Tuesday. Winter storm, blizzard and wind warnings have been issued for portions of Labrador with freezing rain, rainfall and wind warnings for parts of Newfoundland. In addition, a storm surge of 50-60 cm is possible for the West Coast and a surge of 45-70 cm is forecasted for the Labrador Sea. Overall, four to five metre waves are anticipated for Newfoundland with six to 10 metre waves along the ice edge for Labrador.

FES-NL encourages individuals and communities to be mindful of these conditions. Individuals should ensure windows, doors, vents, and drains are clear of ice, snow and other debris; have sufficient food and water on hand; and, monitor local media for updated forecasts and messages from authorities. Communities are also encouraged to ensure local infrastructure is clear of ice, snow and other debris, and prepare municipally-owned facilities for the inclement weather conditions that are forecasted.
